The music tradition at Sherborne Girls is exceptional. Many girls are accomplished Grade 8 musicians, or higher, and the range of instrumental lessons and opportunities to perform chamber music ensembles, concerts, combined orchestras and choirs are almost unrivalled.
The hub of the school’s musical life is the Stuart Centre, comprising 12 teaching and practice rooms, and the Benjamin Britten Hall (BBH), an ideal venue for concerts and drama productions with extensive lighting and projection facilities. This is supplemented in other parts of the School by a further 15 practice rooms and a rehearsal room. In addition, the school enjoys the privilege of using Sherborne’s glorious Abbey as a regular venue for concerts and services.
Piano and singing are the two most popular subjects for individual tuition. The music department has 42 pianos located in the department and its associated teaching and practice rooms and within the seven boarding houses. These include two grand pianos, a Steinway and a Yamaha. In addition to the usual full range of orchestral instruments, individual lessons are available in organ, harp, baroque recorder, classical and electric guitar, drum kit, solo singing and Alexander Technique.
Our choirs include the Madrigal Society, Senior Choir, Quintabile and Junior Choir and many orchestral opportunities are on offer.
