      Higher Education

Selecting appropriate universities, courses or gap year opportunities requires careful consideration and research.

Current students, as well as those who have left the school, are fully supported by the higher education department and careers department, which is led by Mrs Penelope Utting, a careers and higher education adviser with many years' experience of advice and guidance. She offers a comprehensive programme to guide students through the process, including the completion of a 'Centigrade' higher education questionnaire and follow-up interview. Individual meetings are also held to monitor students' progress.

A variety of activities are on offer after the AS examinations to give the girls a head-start in their decision-making process, including a university open day visit and a higher education day with personal statement workshop, as well as a talk from a university admissions tutor. The school’s ‘Guide to Higher Education’ is also published each year to update girls and their parents on their choices.

Students who are interested in applying to Oxbridge are taken to an outreach conference at Epsom Racecourse and also have the chance to attend an Oxbridge preparation day in September and interview evening at Sherborne School in November.

Information is also available for those students who are interested in applying to American and European Universities. SAT preparation classes for those intending to apply to the US are held in conjunction with Sherborne School from the start of each Michaelmas Term.

In addition to scheduled activity, the department has an ‘open door’ policy for girls and they are warmly invited to seek advice from Mrs Utting or extensive range of resources in the careers library.

If you have a query about higher education or gap year opportunities, please email  Mrs Utting at pau@sherborne.com and she will happy to help.
