We have a number of orchestral opportunities which girls can get involved with.

      Sherborne Schools' Orchestras

The Sherborne Schools’ Symphony Orchestra and the Sherborne Schools’ Sinfonia are among the jewels in the crown of the town’s youth music-making. Founded 35 years ago by Sherborne Girls former Director of Music, Augusta Miller and her opposite number at Sherborne School the late Patrick Shelley as an ensemble for pooling the combined instrumental talent of the two schools, membership of the SSSO has in recent years been extended to include all five of Sherborne’s secondary schools. Shortly after the establishment of the Symphony Orchestra the Joint Sinfonia was created for younger, less experienced players, and now welcomes pupils from all the local schools, including Sherborne Preparatory School.

Each of the two orchestras performs at least two major concerts each year. As well as a combined schools’ concert in the autumn term, the SSSO gives an annual concert in a prestigious venue further afield in March. Regular visits have been made to St John’s, Smith Square, St George’s, Bristol and Oxford’s Sheldonian Theatre. Closer to home, a return visit to The Exchange at Sturminster Newton is scheduled for March 2015. The Symphony Orchestra has undertaken two overseas tours, to the Czech republic and to Alsace and Paris. An affiliation with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in 2015 will undoubtedly be an inspiring experience for all the boys and girls involved.

      String Orchestra

Under the direction of the Head of Strings, Catrin Win Morgan (2nd violinist of the Brodowski String Quartet), the String Orchestra is an ensemble for our more advanced string players, exploring a broad repertoire ranging  from Baroque and Classical period masterpieces to works by Walton and Tavener. In recent years the String Orchestra has enjoyed masterclasses with some very distinguished visiting musicians, among them Baroque specialists Simon Standage and Ricardo Barros (link to gallery Ricardo Barros masterclass), and, in October 2014, leading violinist, ‘Old Girl’ Ruth Rogers. The String Orchestra regularly joins with the Madrigal Society for concerts outside school and in May 2015 they made their first appearance at the Sherborne Abbey Festival.

      Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra Collaboration

March 2015 saw the launch of an affiliation between the Sherborne Schools’ Symphony Orchestra and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Following a pilot scheme in 2014, in which the SSSO  received an intensive coaching session from the BSO players, this new initiative, under the auspices of Sherborne Girls and Sherborne School, provides an exciting opportunity to develop further the high standard achieved by our orchestral players. The collaborative programme includes a day’s coaching workshop with BSO principals and Frank Zielhorst, the BSO’s  Levershuline Young Conductor in Residence, opportunities for Sherborne Girls and Boys to give pre-concert performances at the Lighthouse in Poole and observing the BSO in rehearsal.
