      Racquet sports

A very popular sport at Sherborne Girls, the school has consistently maintained a good reputation and standard in tennis. Twelve teams compete in block fixtures against major schools in the summer term.

There are 27 courts in total including four grass courts, seven hard courts, twelve all-weather astroturf courts and one indoor court.

All seven boarding houses have courts close to them and many girls play in their free time for relaxation after a hard day’s work.

The tennis teams have enjoyed unprecedented success in 2016 winning 49 out of 53 matches across all the age groups.  The U14 age group led the way with all four teams remaining unbeaten, while the 1st VI had a very good year winning six out of their seven fixtures. There are many opportunities to play in tournaments at school, including an inter-house tournament and the very popular parent/daughter tournaments. Sherborne Girls also maintains strong links with Sherborne Tennis Club, so the senior girls have an opportunity to play against good club players throughout the year.

The school also prides itself on being able to offer tennis coaching to all, including disability tennis. The team of enthusiastic LTA qualified coaches offers coaching all year round. At present, around 200 girls have private coaching. Every player will receive a very good grounding in technique, tactics and physical conditioning. Coaching sessions run weekly for 50 minutes and are available in individual, pair or groups sessions (max. 4 persons).

Sherborne Girls has two squash courts at Oxley Sports Centre and there has always been a good tradition of success in this sport. There are U15 and U18 teams which play matches against many local schools. As well as school matches, there is also an inter-house tournament and junior and senior individual tournaments. Alongside regular team training, there is extra squash coaching available for all ages. We are fortunate to have the expertise of Tom Pollard who is a very experienced level 3 coach. Coaching is continuous throughout the year. Sessions run weekly for 50 minutes and are available individually or in pairs.
