Water Sports

Swimming

With the opening of the new six lane indoor swimming pool at the Oxley Sports Centre, swimming and water based activities at Sherborne have increased dramatically. Girls have swimming lessons in the LIV,UIV, LV and MV and then as an activity in the senior school. Any girl may train for the school teams at U12 U13 U15 U16 and 1st where the emphasis is on fitness, stamina, technique and competitive swimming. Matches occur mainly in the summer term often along side the boys from Sherborne School. The teams are successful and the school is benefiting from hosting large matches using the electronic timing systems.

Girls have the opportunity to learn to play water polo and have recreational swimming both in the evenings and at the weekend. There is also the opportunity to go early morning swimming training two days a week. At the end of the summer term there is an Inter House Swim meet with trophies to be won for U13, U14 U15 and senior house teams.

Canoeing

Canoeing is available throughout the year in our new indoor swimming pool. Sessions are weekly and last for 60 minutes.

Lifesaving

Life saving is possibly the most demanding multi-discipline sport that exists in the world today, connected with the noble act of lifesaving. Lifesaving offers enjoyment, challenges and learning to all ages and abilities and is a life skill consisting of a variety of swimming and first aid skills to further develop and demonstrate lifesaving fitness and motivation skills.

Sailing

For all you land lovers who have lived in fear of the water, come and try our new Picos at Sutton Bingham. You can sail in pairs or challenge yourself by sailing solo. You never know you might discover that you have a hidden talent. Sailing is taught by a senior instructor on a Thursday during Senior Games time and is a paid activity. On Sunday afternoons, any girl can come and have a fun taster session, or just have a relaxing sail, ‘whatever floats your boat’. As numbers grow we are looking to start a team so girls will be able to participate in races, for those who are more experienced and in need of further challenges.

Sailing runs throughout the year as part of the Physical Education options programme. Students work towards recognised awards, with five girls achieving their RYA stage 2 (Youth)and three girls their RYA Level 2 (Adult) in 2007.
