Keeping fit and healthy, taking part in competitive team sports or excelling at individual sport are all positively encouraged at Sherborne Girls. As full members of the Oxley Sports Centre, girls also have access to a full range of classes including boxercise, zumba, yoga and pilates.
Sherborne Girls has excellent sporting facilities including a 25m six lane swimming pool, 2 squash courts, 27 tennis courts (including grass courts), floodlit astro pitch, climbing wall and a superbly equipped fitness suite.
Whether playing for the school teams, or for personal fitness and enjoyment, girls can use the facilities throughout the day, evening and weekend.
The school has an enviable reputation at lacrosse and hockey with many county and regional level players, and has hosted the National Schools Lacrosse Tournament. Hockey players have been represented at Tier One competition over the past few years. The school hockey teams are regularly represented at regional level competition, both indoor and outdoor – a third place finish in the 2014 U18 indoor finals being a recent highlight.
Our new performance swimming programme sees girls of regional standard and above competing for the school, local and national competitions; currently four swimmers are of national standard, with national finalists and bronze medallists as part of the programme. Three swimmers are currently part of the ASA England talent programme.
Athletics and cross-country are rapidly increasing in popularity, putting the school at the top of the Dorset Independent Schools Trophy in 2014. Girls regularly compete at county and regional level and currently we have a national standard javelin thrower. Swimming combined with running in the disciplines of biathle or biathlon have seen success in one of our girls representing GB in Germany in the summer of 2014.
Tennis is a very popular and successful sport, having an enviable reputation and consistently good results in inter-school fixtures. Private lessons are available from our highly reputable coaching team on four floodlit courts throughout the year.
Alongside the traditional competitive sports, including netball, tennis, swimming, rounders and gymnastics the school also provides coaching and instruction in polo, riding, fencing, climbing, jazz, dance, ballet and karate.
